The Award Presentation will be held on March 17th at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. Tickets can be purchased for $15.50 at the Birchmere Box Office or through Ticketmaster (additional fees will apply). Last year the ceremony sold out, so order your tickets early!

In each of the thirty-eight categories, five nominees were selected based on the average scores of eight judges. In some categories, due to score ties, more than five nominees are announced. Nominations are provided in alphabetical order by nominee.

Unnecessary Farce is a funny, frantic, chaotic, who cares whodunit by Paul Smith Slade. In a hotel room somewhere in America an undercover cop and a “fresh from the academy” rookie are prepared to take down a crooked mayor in the adjoining room. The video camera is set up all ready to record. There is one problem, well, maybe several. This is a farce so everything that can go wrong does, and like any good farce, clothes are optional.

Although the pacing was a little uneven at times, Saturday evening’s performance was fun and quite entertaining. Mike Larson as the undercover cop Eric Sheridan and Shirley Panek as accountant Karen Brown both gave strong performances. Their passion was real while at the same time totally unbelievable. Panek’s fear was seen as realistic while necessarily over the top, which added to the hilarity of the antics of the evening. There was one point when Eric was confessing his feelings to Karen that could have been made more enjoyable by putting some variation in the scene. Maybe Eric should have turned away from her making her have to work at her feelings for him. Maybe a bit more movement would have worked well.

There were many funny scenes in the production, but the delivery overall was uneven. The problem really can’t be linked to one performer. Possibly director Keith Brown got bogged down at times in trying to keep the story moving along. Maybe the script itself was limiting.

One of the best performances was delivered by Jim Adams, playing the kilt wearing assassin Todd. His accent was great, his anger was truly believable, his pratfalls were real and his pacing was terrific. When he started in on a monologue he had everyone’s attention, but it was rookie cop Billie Dwyer (Elsbeth Clay) who got the applause when she interpreted the speech. Dwyer wanted to please the police department, but her fear of closed spaces and other hesitancies (fear of handcuffs) were a problem. Dwyer started out a bit slow in the first act, but by the second act the adrenaline kicked in and her delivery was more believable. One thing that was honest was her sincerity. Clay meant every word that she said.

Ken Kienas seemed nervous on stage, but that nervousness fit perfectly into the character of Mayor Meekly. Somehow the Mayor always managed to enter a room at the most inappropriate times, which made for an excellent running gag throughout the show. Mary Meekly, the Mayor’s wife was a small but important part. Rachel Duda performed the role with grace and was unflustered no matter what happened. But underneath Mary’s calm exterior lurked a spitfire waiting to arise!

Agent Frank (Eric Small), a member of the Mayor’s security team, had the widest range of goals to play. Sometimes he was a good guy, sometimes a bad guy, sometimes dimwitted, other times a bit crafty. Throughout, his antics were the most believable and his lust for Karen Brown evident.

In a farce such as this, one must have an abundance of doors to setup the missed opportunities as one person leaves through a door just as another is coming in the opposite door. Set Designer Keith Brown designed a wonderful set of adjoining hotel rooms, with generic paintings on the walls. The large plant near center stage sometimes blocked the audience’s view of upstage action, so be careful of sitting to close to the stage. A small touch that would have helped define the two rooms is to have built a low wall between the rooms, possibly just as an extension from the connecting doors wall. Costume Designer Edye Smith made good use of colors and made all the actors look professional.

The animated comedy of Unnecessary Farce will get you laughing throughout the evening.

Deathtrap follows the adventures of scheming thriller playwright Sydney Bruhl as he plots to acquire all the copies of one of his student’s plays. Twists abound as layers of his plan are revealed. Add a psychic and an inquisitive lawyer to the mix, and the situation gets even more twists. Deathtrap was the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway and was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play.

I have to say that Deathtrap is an excellent thriller. Plenty of twists occur and are revealed in very unexpected ways. The characters, while not all are very likeable, are realistic (or as realistic as a psychic can be) and each gains the sympathy of the audience at different points of the adventure. The problem is, that once you’ve seen Deathtrap, you can’t forget it. I saw Deathtrap performed by the Vienna Theatre Company several years ago, and just a few weeks ago by the McLean Community Players, so I knew when the twists were going to occur. Unfortunately that really affected my enjoyment of this production. So I will not give any twists away in this article!

There is one point in this thriller where something very exciting happens. I was expecting it, but even I was still surprised. But my reaction was nothing compared to the reaction from the audience. Gasps of shock rang out, along with more than a few shouts of fear. Then, while the actors were still doing what they needed to be doing, the murmuring started. “Did you see that?” “Who was that?” “I thought so-and-so was…” It was a superbly performed moment, making the price of admission worth it for that moment alone.

Michael N. Dunlop as playwright Sidney Bruhl didn’t quite make his character as unseemly as he could have. It appeared at times as if he were plotting a heinous crime, but instead was going to merely jaywalk. Karen Kellner made Sidney’s wife Myra quite likeable. Kristopher Northrup as first-time playwright Clifford Anderson was a bit too sure of himself, too confident. But that actually worked well as he started processing the conversation he was having with Sidney and Myra in the first act. Millie Ferrara as psychic Helga ten Dorp was very funny. She brought some much-needed humor into her scenes, and her timing was spot on. Joseph Mariano as lawyer Porter Milgrim seemed a bit uncomfortable at times.

Director Gayle Negri made an odd choice in the first act concerning the relationship of two of the characters. In the second act, that relationship is developed a bit, but because it was a weak “partnership” some of the tension was lost. These scenes created several opportunities to add layers of personality to the characters, but the scenes ended up feeling a bit flat.

There was a green banker’s light on the desk in the first act that blocked the view of Sidney every time he sat at his desk. Otherwise the set, painting, and dressing was fabulous. The weapons on the walls were quite distinctive, with enough different types of weapons to make for an interesting view.

Definitely get out to Bowie this weekend to catch the final two performances of Deathtrap. The surprise scene and the guessing of who does what to whom when will make for a gratifying time.

A Note From the Director

While Deathtrap was not the show I submitted to direct, when I read it, I fell in love with it. The many twists and turns in Ira Levin’s plot make it an amazing piece of theater. The more times you read it, the more nuances you discover and the deeper the characters become. You suddenly realize things about these people that you never thought of before. It’s a wonderfully written play and a joy to put together. This wonderful cast brings each person to new life every night, so I’m pleased to have you here to to meet them again tonight. Welcome and enjoy the show!

Sorry! Wrong Chimney! is a farce by Jack Sharkey and Leo W. Sears. Newlyweds Samantha and David Tuttle are having a rough first Christmas. David is always working late and Samantha begins to suspect another woman. Her next door neighbor friend Natalie comes to console and complain about her own husband, Bill, a psychiatrist. She also warns Natalie about the Santa Claus Burglar breaking into houses in the area. When Samantha overhears David and Natalie talking she gets the wrong idea and becomes extremely upset. After storming off, the Santa Claus Burglar makes an appearance as everyone arrives at Samantha and David’s house. When a policeman arrives, even more mayhem ensues as the policeman is hypnotized by Bill.

Elsbeth Clay played the role of Samantha Tuttle. She was very believable in her role and made good use of facial features and emotions to carry her part. She and her neighbor Natalie played by Rosalie Daelemans may have been a little stiff around each other in the beginning, but by the end of the performance were eager to keep each other and their husbands from going to jail.

Samantha and Natalie’s husbands Bill and David (Aref Dajani and Lucas English) both played their parts well. English was a bit stiff at times, but the love for his wife showed through. Dajani vacillated between frustrated and intrigued by the situation he found himself in. Kris Kreigle (Jeffery Lesniak) and his fiancée Sheila (Cassie Youmans) were very expressive and though the pacing of the performance was sometimes rocky the two rounded out the humorous antics nicely. The policeman played by Fred Wells was a good sport about his role in serving the public.

The set for Sorry! Wrong Chimney! was quite festive. Costumer Rose English-Arredondo’s use of colors really helped set the tone for the fun show. In the first act, a gunshot was supposed to be heard, but didn’t happen, leading to a bit of confusion as the characters talked about the noise. The clever resolution of the myriad of problems generated by the mistaken identities, hypnotism gone awry, and unexpected house guests was nicely done, and a surprise.

PGLT’s Sorry! Wrong Chimney! is a silly farce, with a few minor problems, but gives a good dose of Christmas revelry.

Born Yesterday is a comedy in two acts. Written and taking place in 1946, it’s the story of a crooked businessman trying to buy a senator. Sound familiar? The businessman’s mistress is a little rough around the edges so he hires a reporter to “smooth her out.” The two fall in love and Billie Dawn begins to realize there is more to life than making money and begins to see the politician, Harry Brock, for who he really is.

Born Yesterday may simply be a show that did not age well; its slow pacing made this performance seem to drag. Director Norma Ozur listed in her director’s note how things were priced and which new gadgets and technologies came out in 1946. That’s interesting, but Born Yesterday shows that even though some things have changed in the past 65 years, politicians haven’t.

Harry Brock, the junkyard tycoon who has arrived in Washington to “buy” himself a senator, was played by Sandy Irving. Irving managed to come across pretty believably as a real schmuck. His brash, overbearing way made even the tough guys tremble. Brock genuinely loved Billie, despite his rough edges. His mistress Billie Dawn was played by Mary Koster. Koster was uncouth in the first act and managed to cause the tycoon to feel the need to educate her on life in Washington DC. Koster’s no-nonsense earthy attitude was charming to watch.

Richard Koster as Paul Verrall, Billie’s tutor, started out very stiff at the beginning of the show. He was simply intimidated by Brock’s staff and reputation. By the second act, R. Koster was much more relaxed as he grew to love Billie. Senator Norval Hedges was a crafty but likable veteran of the Washington political game. Played by Edd Miller he was down to earth and very comfortable with the corrupt life in Washington. All of Brocks’s henchmen were chilly and their one emotion seemed to be annoyance.

Watching Billie grow under Paul’s tutelage was rewarding, even as she struggled to understand what she was being taught. The closing scene shows a lot of action, including a bit of unexpected violence, although the final resolution feels unsatisfying.

Set Designer Dan Lavagna created an elaborate two-level DC hotel suite, complete with a view of the U.S. Capitol. The hotel room’s main door on stage right occasionally created a scrum if someone was on the phone, and someone was fixing a drink, and people were entering or exiting the room. It may have been more interesting to put a little more distance between the bar and the front door. Linda Swann’s costumes were flashy, with Billie Dawn appearing in several glitzy outfits throughout the evening.

The basic plot of Born Yesterday (a naïve outsider appears in Washington DC and tries to fix things) evokes the story of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Maybe we’re simply too jaded now, but the light-hearted humor of Born Yesterday doesn’t quite compensate for its somewhat dated plot with slow pacing.

A Note From the Director

Born Yesterday is a fairy tale. It’s got the usual hero and heroine and villain(s). it may even have the usual happy ending. This one is different, however, in that it takes place in the not-so-distant past. It’s a past that some here today remember and some may have heard about from parents and grandparents. It’s a bit different from today.

It’s 1946 in the US. We’re a year away from a devastating war that united the nation at a great cost of lives. Gas cost 21 cents a gallon. Truman is in the White House. A New car costs on average $1,120. The first telecast of a baseball game (Chicago: Cards vs. Cubs) takes place. AT&T announces the first car phones. Born Yesterday opens on Broadway. Men’s ties are $1.50. Nehru forms a government in India. A stamp is 3 cents. The CIA is set up by President Truman. A movie ticket cost 55 cents. The U.S. detonates two atom bombs at Bikini Atoll and bikini bathing suits make their debut. Bread is 10 cents a loaf and eggs are 59 cents a dozen. The United Nations convenes in London and the Security Council holds its first meeting. The average annual income is $2600. EINIAC, the first computer, is introduced. The guilty Nazi war criminals are hanged. Weight Watchers is formed. Ground beef costs 28 cents/lb. and milk is 70 cents/gallon.

Different time indeed. But people are not much different. The good ones follow the laws and try to help right the wrongs. The bad ones, the selfish ones, are for themselves only and attempt to get what they want at others expense. Let’s go back to 1946 and meet both kinds. Enjoy!

Putting on a farce is hard. The actors practice, practice, practice. The director guides yells, cheers, cries, up until opening night when his work is done. Then you have opening night and now after months of rehearsals you have actors performing in front of a live audience who you hope are laughing at all the comedy both intended and otherwise, combined with having to learn where the audience will be laughing, and for how long. There were a few spots in Prince George’s Little Theatre’s Don’t Dress For Dinner when the actors talked over the laughter and there were some minor line issues and some circular delivery, but those are all things that will be overcome now that opening night is over and the rest of the run (with hopefully many more live audiences) is before them.

Husband and wife Bernard and Jacqueline (Michael N. Dunlop and Jill Goodrich) came across as a strong married couple. They were comfortable around each other and had a solid rhythm. Michael struggled with speaking over the laughter which made him difficult to hear on occasion. The ensemble cast also struggled with some lines, but that too can possibly be chalked up to some opening night jitters.

The other “guests” included Suzanne played by Christa Krosner, Robert played by Jack Degnan, Suzette (Rosalie Daelemans) and George (Keith Brown). Within ten minutes no one is who they are supposed to be paired with complete strangers, and this is why farces are so much fun. Degnan had a believable persona of a rundown, beaten man just wanting to spend a quiet weekend with “friends” yet ends up playing a multitude of parts and never 100% sure what’s happening. At one point he was asked to explain all the puzzles and gives a superb not so condensed, yet incredibly accurate version what he thinks is going on. Sexy Suzanne the mistress (turned cook) appeared to make herself right at home. Keeping up with the pace beautifully, Kronser kept the timing under control. Daelemans’s character as Suzette gave a believable performance. She let her hair down (literally) and exposed (almost literally) a wilder side that no one knew was there. Even though his part was not huge, Keith Brown as George had the best eyes of any of them. When he began to grasp what was going on the facial expressions were priceless! Farces may require some physical comedy which was performed with a realism not to miss.

Set Designer Dan Lavanga created a good strong set. The doors were sturdy as were the stairs. Lots of detail went into making the set seem real. Set dresser Roy Peterson brought in a whole bar complete with ice, glasses and drinks which lent a homey air to the French country home. The lights and sound were also well crafted and executed to make for a smooth opening night.

This was a well executed farce that will leave some confused, but everyone laughing.

Director’s Notes

Oh, those naughty French! They do such outrageous things! We can enjoy their exploits vicariously knowing we’d never be so bad. Of course, we love following the scandals of the rich and famous, the politicians and the preacher’s daughters, the sports star and the rock star-all so shocking. To quote Steel Magnolias, “If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit by me!”

There is great fun in watching people with all their foibles dig themselves in a hole and then try to escape. And farce has always provided a way to watch the world tumble down on someone with breakneck speed, while knowing that somehow it will all magically be restored in the end.

This is the first time I’ve worked with Prince George’s Little Theatre and I must admit I’ve found it to be a great experience. Everyone has been extremely helpful and worked very hard to support me and make the experience a pleasure. Most of the actors I’ve worked with before and they all have been very supportive, too. In many ways, farce is one of the most difficult forms to do well. Learning lines alone is a major task as many are confusing or are non sequiturs. Timing, body language, and physical comedy all add to the challenge. The cast has been wonderful and have made it a pleasure to put together. Thanks to the whole crew and especially to Andy for agreeing to produce (excellently!) for me again. And a special thanks to my wife, Cathy, for all her love and support.

But the most fun I putting together something that you, the audience, will enjoy. We bet euros to croissants you’ll find a lot to laugh at and to chase away the cares of the day. (And you’ll want to know, 50 euros is about $71, so a 5000 euro coat is… well, you can do the math!) Attention! Dinner is about to be served!
